e fu espressa chiaramente
per la prima volta
da Eraclito: (Engels, Anti-Dühring) |

Investments and Economic Development in Genoa before the First World War
In its millenary history Genoa appears, according to Fernand Braudel, as “an ultra-sensitive seismograph, whose needle quivered whenever there were stirrings in the rest of the world”. In this work – first published in 1969-73 – Giorgio Doria discussed with considerable breadth and depth of analysis the stages of capitalist development in Genoa in the 19th century up to the First World War. In outlining the vicissitudes of the local groups, families and sections, the character of the “Genoese bourgeoisie” clearly emerges, wrote Doria, in “its constant effort to use the State and public powers as a shield”, in “its perennial wavering between a more verbal than substantial liberalism and an anxious search for solid protectionist shelter”. The resulting research field and method are exemplary, based on a rich documentation which is also of present-day relevance in front of the many questions still crucial in a vital site of transport and, more generally, of the industrial heart of the Old Continent engaged in the race for perfecting its condition of Europe as a power.
